British Gas to cut gas price by 10% in February
As the BBC reports, British Gas have announced a price cut of 10% on their standard gas tariff as of February 19th.
According to British Gas, the move will trim £84 from the average annual gas bill of up to seven million UK households. However, British Gas' price cuts will not apply to those on fixed tariffs.
Observers stated that even if rivals followed suit, it was "too little and too late" to make a significant difference to winter fuel bills. The BBC quotes the chief executive fo watchdog Consumer Focus, Ed Mayo, as saying: "There are millions of dual fuel and electricity only customers that will not see a penny off their bill. We will now turn the heat up on the other five companies that are keeping prices sky high."
Money saving Expert Martin Lewis has also criticised the price cut as too low, stating that he was expecting other suppliers to drop their prices, too.
At the beginning of January, Scottish Power, one of the major suppliers, already announced that it was relaunching one of its fixed-price gas products with a reduction of 10%. Likewise, Good Energy is lowering its standard electricity and gas tariffs by 7.5% effective from January 31st.
