Winter energy bills hit a record: £533 for just three months!
Millions of householders are receiving record energy bills for the winter which run to an average of £532.70. This figure is some £57 ahead of the previous record last year of £475, research shows.
The increase was driven by a combination of the coldest winter in 30 years and the fact the 'big six' energy giants failed to pass on steep falls in wholesale prices to customers.
When the winter is as cold as the last one was, and drags on as long, you have little choice but to keep the central heating on higher temperatures - and warnings of more cold weather suggest the pain of higher heating bills will continue!
Although wholesale gas and electricity prices are down 60 per cent from their peak in the middle of 2008, most household tariffs have only fallen by less than 15 per cent.
As a result, the average profit margin the energy giants - British Gas, Scottish & Southern, nPower, Eon, EDF and Scottish Power - are making from customers has soared.
