Price war on online energy tariffs

Competition between major UK energy suppliers is intensifying, with all of the big players seeking the top spot. As a result, consumers can reap significant savings on online energy tariffs.

In 2008, energy prices increased by a dramatic 42%, and so far this year, UK energy suppliers refused to budge, offering only a 5% decrease in standard rates. However, with winter approaching and many households coming off fixed tariffs, E.ON, First Utility and ScottishPower have all slashed their internet tariffs in a bid to undercut each other. As a result, significant savings opportunities are now opening up for savvy consumers.

The cheapest online energy tariff now comes in at £952 a year, the lowest available so far this year, and a substantial £250 below standard prices of around £1,200.

The cheapest energy tariff available to UK households comes from smaller supplier First Utility, followed by E.ON's FixOnline v3, and ScottishPower's Energy Online Saver 7. The E.ON tariff also offers the benefit of a guaranteed price until December 2010.
